About

About the Council

A peer council for chief executives of chemical and specialty manufacturing companies, meeting since 1965.

Our history

How CSMC began

Robert Henson, president of Flexible Products Company, imagined a council where chief executives of small, chemically oriented manufacturers could talk freely with peers who faced the same problems.

December 1964

The idea

An introductory letter outlining the proposed council went to about 75 companies.

March 16, 1965

The first meeting

Ten company representatives met for a one-day session at the Palmer House in Chicago.

May 25, 1965

The charter meeting

Twenty attendees met at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York and adopted a constitution and bylaws.

Today

31 member companies

The Council still meets three times a year as a group of non-competing CEOs.

The Council

How the Council works

From the first meeting, members agreed the Council should bring together chief executives of companies that don’t compete, so discussions could be free and open.

Non-competing members

No two member companies compete, so members can speak openly about real problems.

One representative per company

Each member company has one voting representative, usually its owner or CEO.

Run by its members

The Council’s officers are elected by the members, and dues stay modest.

Meetings

How meetings work

Members meet three times a year.

February facility visit

A member company hosts the meeting at its facility, including a tour of the plant.

May facility visit

A second member-hosted meeting and plant tour each spring.

Annual fall meeting

The annual fall meeting at a resort destination—typically four or five days, with invited speakers and open discussion among members.
